About our profiling mattresses
Who would benefit from having a profiling mattress?
If you or a loved one are in bed for an extended period recovering from surgery, old age or medical conditions, they will be at risk of developing pressure injuries.
Our low profile bed mattresses are designed to provide support & pressure relief for the user. A healthcare professional will assess any risk, which can be dependant on many factors including age, weight, medical condition etc. Our mattresses are risk rated i.e. low, medium, high or very high risk.
The mattress should match the risk factor that has been identified to reduce the risk of pressure injuries.
Pressure Mattress
Profiling mattress are usually pressure mattress. They can be tailored to meet the individual needs of the patient based on their risk of developing pressure injuries.. These mattresses are designed to be used with a profiling bed with a mattress platform consisting of two, three or four sections depending upon the level and complexity of the profiling action provided. These adjustable sections enable the different parts of the bed platform to incline independently to create a rising backrest and knee break profile for increased comfort, support and pressure care.
Stretch covers to reduce shear & friction
Our mattresses are designed to move along with a profiling bed to minimise shear and friction forces during movement, ensuring patients receive the best and most effective pressure relief possible.
Most of our low profile bed mattresses come with a vapour permeable cover that resists fluids and stretches without causing additional friction when the user moves. Mattresses should be checked regularly for any damage.
A word about preventing pressure ulcers
It can be challenging to prevent pressure ulcers completely, but there are some things you or your care team can do to reduce the risk. These include:
- Regularly changing your position – if you’re unable to change position yourself, a relative or carer will need to help you
- Checking your skin every day for early signs and symptoms of pressure ulcers – this will be done by your care team if you’re in a hospital or care home
- Have a healthy, balanced diet that contains enough protein and a good variety of vitamins and minerals – if you’re concerned about your diet or caring for someone whose diet may be poor, ask your GP or healthcare team for a referral to a dietitian
- Stopping smoking – smoking makes you more likely to get pressure ulcers because of the damage caused to blood circulation
If you’re in a hospital or care home, your healthcare team should be aware of the risk of developing pressure ulcers. They should carry out a risk assessment, monitor your skin, and use preventative measures like regular repositioning.
