What our customers say about us …
Shop by Wheelchair Type
Manual Wheelchairs
Manual wheelchairs are propelled by the user or pushed by a carer: no battery, no charging and no motor. They are lighter, more affordable and easier to transport than powered alternatives, making them the most popular choice for everyday home use, day trips and travel. The range includes self-propelled, transit, lightweight, folding and bariatric models.
Electric Wheelchairs
Types of Wheelchairs
Self-Propelled Wheelchairs
Designed for users with good upper body strength who want to move independently. Large rear wheels with handrims let the user control their own pace and direction, perfect for home use and short outdoor trips. Our Explorer Value A self-propelled wheelchair is a popular, great-value choice.
Transit / Attendant-Propelled Wheelchairs
Made to be pushed by a carer, family member or friend. These are lighter and more compact, making them easier to manoeuvre through doorways and ideal for shopping trips, hospital visits and days out. Our assistant-propelled wheelchair is a practical favourite with carers.
Folding Wheelchairs
These collapse quickly and compactly for easy storage and transport. Most fold in seconds and fit neatly into car boots. Our Explorer Value model folds to just 23cm wide.
Lightweight Wheelchairs
Built with aluminium or carbon fibre frames to reduce weight significantly. Much easier to lift into cars, carry upstairs or transport regularly. Many weigh under 10 kg, which is ideal when a carer has limited strength.
Paediatric Wheelchairs
Specially designed for children, with adjustable features that grow with them. Available in bright colours and comfortable designs suitable for school and everyday life.
Bariatric Wheelchairs
Strong, reinforced chairs for heavier users (from 160kg upwards) with wider seats and extra stability for safe, comfortable daily use.

Choosing a Wheelchair with Adapt A Home
Who's going to be pushing?
A self-propelled wheelchair has large rear wheels so the user can push themselves along, best for people with enough upper-body strength who want day-to-day independence. A transit or assistant-propelled wheelchair has smaller rear wheels and ergonomic handles for a carer or family member to push, making it easier for hospital visits, shopping trips or longer distances.
How often will it move around?
If the wheelchair needs to fit in a car boot, live in a cupboard, or travel on a plane, a folding wheelchair is the right shape. The Explorer Value folds to just 23 cm wide. The Explorer Travel is built around travel specifically, with dual braking and breathable mesh cushions.
What's the user's weight and build?
Adapt A Home wheelchairs support 100 to 120 kg, depending on the frame. The Explorer Value and Explorer Travel are rated to 100 kg, the Assistant Propelled to 115 kg and the Explorer Standard to 120 kg. For heavier users, a bariatric wheelchair with a reinforced steel frame is the correct choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the NHS supply wheelchairs, or is it better to buy one privately?
The NHS can provide a wheelchair free of charge through local wheelchair services if the user meets clinical criteria, but waiting times and model choice vary by area. Buying privately through Adapt A Home or elsewhere gives instant availability, full choice over features and the option of a trial before committing. Many users start with an NHS chair and upgrade privately once they know what they actually want.
How do I measure for the right wheelchair size?
Can a folding wheelchair be taken on a flight?
How do I qualify for VAT relief on a wheelchair?
At Adapt A Home checkout, VAT relief applies if you have a long-term physical or mental impairment, a chronic condition (diabetes, Parkinson’s, or MS, for example), or a terminal illness. You can also get VAT relief when you speak to our sales team, who will guide you through the process. Registered charities can qualify by supplying a charity number. VAT relief does not apply if you are able-bodied.
