Stairlifts for Narrow Stairs - Slim Solutions for Every UK Home

Narrow staircases are one of the most common challenges in UK homes, particularly in older terraced houses, Victorian properties and compact period homes. If you have been told a stairlift will not fit your stairs, do not give up. In most cases, there is a safe and practical solution.

At Adapt A Home, we supply and install the ICON UP. Lift a slimline stairlift built specifically for narrow and difficult staircases. It features an ultra-slim rail, an automatic swivel seat, fold-away armrests, and a fold-away footrest. It takes up the least possible space on your stairs while keeping you completely safe on every journey.

Do You Have a Narrow Staircase?

If your staircase is narrow, you may think a stairlift is not possible. With today’s slimline designs, they are safe and reliable solutions for most UK homes.
Here are the general minimum staircase widths required:

Staircase Type Minimum Width Needed
Straight staircase From 600mm (approx. 24 inches)
Curved staircase From 660mm (approx. 26 inches)
Very narrow specialist fit From 610mm in some cases

These are guidelines only. The only accurate way to confirm fit is a professional home survey. Our engineers will visit your home, record all the key measurements and give you a clear, honest answer on the day at no cost and with no obligation.

Why Narrow Stairs Cause Problems

Most people assume staircase width is the only measurement that matters. It is not.

When you sit in a stairlift, the distance from your spine to your knees or your toes, if your feet protrude further forward is what actually determines whether the stairlift will fit. Once you add the width of the rail itself, the total space required can exceed your staircase width, even if it looks wide enough at first glance.

This is why some customers are told a stairlift will not fit, even when their staircase seems perfectly reasonable. It is not just about width. It is about your body dimensions combined with the stairlift design.

The good news is that there are three well-proven solutions to this problem.

Three Solutions for Narrow Staircases

Slimline Seated Stairlift

The most popular choice. A slim rail and compact chair design reduce the space required. When not in use, the seat, armrests and the footrest fold away flat, keeping the staircase clear for everyone else in the household. Suitable for most narrow, straight and curved staircases and our first recommendation for the majority of customers.

For Reduced Effort & Extra Support

The user sits in a raised, angled position, more like leaning on a high stool. Because the body is more upright and the knees do not protrude as far, less width is needed between the chair and the wall. A practical solution for very tight straight staircases.

Please note: a perching stairlift requires the user to be able to stand safely and maintain balance throughout the journey. If your mobility is likely to change over time, a seated model is a better long-term investment, as a perching stairlift can become unsuitable quickly if standing becomes difficult

Rotating Seat for Narrow Curved Staircases

For very narrow curved staircases, a stairlift with an auto-rotating seat pivots as it travels around each bend, reducing the knee-to-wall clearance needed at tight corners. This is the most advanced solution and often the only practical option for the tightest curved staircases in the UK.

Key Features of the ICON UP.Lift

Ultra-slim rail

Smaller profile than standard stairlift rails. Leaves maximum clear space on the staircase for other household members to pass safely.

Automatic swivel seat

The seat rotates automatically at the top and bottom of the stairs so you always step off facing away from the steps. Safer and more practical in tight spaces.

Fold-away armrests and footrest

When not in use, everything folds flat against the chair. The staircase stays as clear as possible for everyone else in the home to pass.

On-site modular rail system

The rail is assembled on-site from modular sections. No waiting for factory-made parts and no delays. Adjustments can be made during installation, which keeps the process fast.

Straight and curved options

Available for both straight and curved staircases. Curved rails are custom-built to match your exact staircase layout, including bends, half-landings, and tight turns.

Battery-powered:

The stairlift continues to operate safely during a power cut, giving you peace of mind at all times.

Safety sensors:

Automatic stop if an obstruction is detected on the staircase, protecting both the user and others in the home.

Common Concerns About Narrow Staircases

My walls are not strong enough to support a stairlift

Stairlifts are never attached to the walls. They are always secured to the stair treads. Wall strength is not a factor, even in older properties with lath and plaster walls.

My stairs are too steep.

Most stairlifts handle stair pitches from standard angles up to around 72 degrees. Steep stairs are a common feature of older UK homes and are not usually a barrier to installation.

Another company said it cannot be done.

Different companies work with different models and different levels of experience. We regularly fit stairlifts in homes where another company has already said no. Our survey is free and there is no obligation. It is always worth getting a second opinion.

I live in a period or listed property.

Because stairlifts attach to the stair treads and not the walls, installation rarely requires any structural changes. This makes them suitable for period properties and in most cases listed buildings.

Help With the Cost

Disabled Facilities Grant

The Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is a government-funded scheme that can contribute towards the cost of a stairlift for eligible applicants in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It is means-tested and administered by your local council.

Your occupational therapist can refer you, or you can apply directly through your local authority. We can also help you with the information needed to apply and guide you through the process.

VAT Relief

If you have a disability or long-term health condition, VAT is automatically removed on eligible products at checkout. Simply provide your exemption details when enquiring.
