What is the best head protection for disability?

For individuals with disabilities, falls pose a significant risk, potentially leading to severe head injuries and their associated consequences. Whether due to mobility impairments, balance issues, or other challenges, it is crucial to prioritise head protection to minimise the risk of injuries. In this article, we will explore some of the best types of head protection gear designed to safeguard disabled individuals against falls and reduce the likelihood of head injuries.

Full-face helmets

Full-face helmets provide comprehensive protection to the entire head, including the face and jaw areas. These helmets are particularly suitable for individuals with disabilities who have limited mobility or coordination, as they offer additional coverage and stability. Look for helmets with appropriate certifications, comfortable padding, and an adjustable fit to ensure maximum safety and comfort.

Protective headgear with extra padding

Protective headgear designed specifically for individuals with disabilities often features additional padding to absorb impact and minimise the risk of head injuries. These headgear options are typically made from soft foam or similar materials and can be worn discreetly under hats or caps. They are particularly useful for individuals who experience frequent falls or engage in activities that involve potential head collisions, such as seizures or involuntary movements associated with certain disabilities.

Safety helmets with chin straps

Safety helmets with chin straps provide added stability and security, ensuring that the helmet remains in place during a fall. This type of head protection is beneficial for individuals with disabilities who have difficulty maintaining balance or exhibit unpredictable movements. The chin strap helps secure the helmet, reducing the risk of it becoming dislodged upon impact. Look for helmets with adjustable straps and comfortable chin padding to ensure a proper fit and minimise discomfort.

Impact-resistant headbands

Impact-resistant headbands are designed to protect the forehead and temples, which are common areas of impact during falls. These headbands feature padding and durable materials that absorb and disperse impact forces, reducing the risk of head injuries. They are lightweight, comfortable, and often adjustable to accommodate different head sizes. Impact-resistant headbands are suitable for a wide range of disabilities and can be worn during various activities, from recreational sports to daily routines.

Customised headgear

For individuals with specific head protection needs due to unique disabilities or medical conditions, customised headgear may be the most effective option. Customisation can involve tailoring the size, shape, and padding of the headgear to fit the individual’s requirements precisely. This approach ensures optimal protection and comfort, addressing any specific concerns or limitations associated with the disability. Consult with healthcare professionals, such as occupational therapists or assistive technology specialists, to explore customised headgear options. When it comes to protecting individuals with disabilities against falls and head injuries, selecting the right head protection gear is paramount.

Full-face helmets, protective headgear with extra padding, safety helmets with chin straps, impact-resistant headbands, and customised headgear are all excellent choices to safeguard against falls and reduce the risk of head injuries. It is essential to consider the specific needs and challenges of the individual when selecting head protection gear, ensuring a proper fit, comfort, and adequate coverage. By prioritizing head protection, we can enhance the safety and well-being of disabled individuals, empowering them to engage in various activities with confidence and reduced risk of injury.

VAT Relief for the Disabled

What is VAT relief?

We have compiled this small guide to help you understand who is and who isn’t eligible to claim VAT relief on disability aids available to buy on this website. VAT relief allows chronically ill or disabled people to buy eligible items at 0% tax rather than the current standard rate of  VAT – saving them a significant amount of money.

Who is eligible for VAT relief?

To be eligible for VAT relief the government says that you have to fit the following criteria:

  • Charities – simply provide us with your charity number.
  • A person is ‘chronically sick or disabled’ if they are a person:
    • With a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon their ability to carry out everyday activities; with a condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes; or who is terminally ill.
  • Important to note: It does NOT include a frail elderly person who is otherwise able-bodied or any person who is only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, such as with a broken limb.

What proof do we need to provide?

The government requires a simple declaration to be made as to the nature of your disability at the time of order in order to waive VAT on an eligible purchase. No proof of your disability need be shown to any party at any time. It is easy to claim VAT relief, all we need to know is the full name, full address and what their chronic sickness or disability is. We do not need a doctor’s letter or any reference numbers as long as we have the requested details.

The above information can be provided to us during the checkout. If you order online, by phone or by post we will send you a form and a free return envelope asking you for the above information and a signature.
