What Reputable Suppliers of Mobility Aids Include: Adapt A Home’s Free Home Survey, Next-Day Installation and Aftercare

Mobility Aids for Comfortable Living

A reputable mobility equipment supplier surveys your home before quoting, installs with its own trained engineers, and looks after the equipment afterwards. Adapt A Home does all three: free no-obligation surveys, next-day installation, and a 12-month warranty backed by our own service team.

Those three stages are what separate suppliers of mobility aids who sell you a box from those who solve the problem. You can see the full range of mobility aids and disability equipment we supply, but this guide is about what should happen around the product.

It Starts with a Survey, Not a Sales Pitch

No honest quote for fitted equipment comes before someone has seen the space.

We offer free home surveys and product demonstrations across London, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the other home counties, at no obligation. Trained engineers visit, assess the situation and recommend what suits, before you commit to anything. For stairlifts, hoists, home lifts and ramps, the survey is what makes an accurate quote possible at all.

A survey should cover four things:

  • The space itself, measured properly. Staircase shape, doorway widths, floor levels, where a hoist track would run.
  • The person. What they can manage now, what they struggle with, who else is in the house.
  • The options, including the cheaper one. If a portable ramp does the job, you shouldn’t be quoted for a modular one.
  • A clear price, with no obligation to accept it.

How to Check Suppliers of Mobility Aids Before You Commit

This part matters more with mobility aids than with most purchases, because the buyer is often deciding under pressure after a fall, a discharge or a diagnosis. Ask these of any suppliers of mobility aids you are considering.

Look for BHTA Membership

The British Healthcare Trades Association’s Code of Practice is approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. BHTA says its code is CTSI-approved, that members must not use high-pressure selling tactics, and that a copy of its leaflet on buying healthcare equipment safely should be given to consumers, particularly during a home visit. BHTA also audits members and runs mystery shops. You can verify membership in its directory rather than taking a logo at face value. Adapt A Home is a member of the BHTA and LEIA, and our products meet British Standards.

Know Your Cancellation Rights

Citizens Advice explains that when you buy something you haven’t seen in person you automatically get a 14-day cooling-off period, starting the day after your order arrives. The exception matters in this trade: bespoke or made-to-measure items don’t automatically carry one. A curved stairlift rail or a made-to-measure chair may well fall into that category, so ask what applies before you sign.

Ask Who Does the Fitting

Ours is done by our own fully trained engineers, and our engineers carry out the servicing afterwards too.

Delivery and Installation

Once you’ve decided, the gap between ordering and using the equipment is where suppliers of mobility aids differ most.

We offer standard delivery, express delivery for urgent orders, and a white glove service that includes full assembly, in-home setup, a demonstration and removal of all packaging. Same-day delivery is available across London. Next-day installation is available on stairlifts, and a straight stairlift is usually fitted in 2 to 4 hours.

On mobility scooters, delivery is free within Greater London on the next working day. Elsewhere in the UK it’s £175 and takes 5 to 7 working days.

For anything fitted, stairlifts, ceiling track hoists, home lifts and modular ramps, installation is carried out by our fully trained engineers.

Aftercare: What Our Warranty Actually Says

Aftercare is where a mobility equipment supplier either earns the repeat business or loses it. Our standard warranty runs for 12 months from delivery or installation.

  • Defects that appear in that period are repaired, or parts replaced, free of charge.
  • Any part repaired or replaced is covered for the rest of the period.
  • Consumable items are not covered, unless they have worn badly because of an original manufacturing defect.
  • Parts come from the equipment manufacturer. We don’t source or fit third-party parts.
  • Damage from neglect, accident or improper use isn’t covered, and nor is equipment altered from the manufacturer’s specification or repaired by someone else before we were told.
  • The warranty is not transferable to a new owner.
  • Calls are covered between 9am and 5pm, excluding weekends and bank holidays.
  • None of this affects your statutory rights.

Extended warranties are available. They come with one condition worth knowing up front: the equipment has to be serviced every 12 months from the install date, by us or an authorised agent, for each year the extended warranty runs. Consumables and wear-and-tear parts are chargeable, and the price of a service is always agreed before the work is done.

Servicing, Maintenance and LOLER inspections

Equipment that lifts people needs looking after, and that is true of disability aids more than most household kit.

We provide servicing, maintenance and repairs on everything we supply, including stairlifts, hoists, mobility scooters and profiling beds. That includes LOLER inspections for hoists and other lifting equipment, carried out by our fully trained engineers across London and the UK.

We also tailor planned preventative maintenance contracts, and we supply and service equipment for care homes, hospitals, NHS trusts, charities and local authorities. If you’re managing equipment for a service rather than a household, ask about a maintenance contract and bulk arrangements.

Hiring first, If You’re Not sure

Buying isn’t the only route. You can hire mobility aids across London and the home counties: wheelchairs from £49 a week and mobility scooters from £95 a week.

Hire equipment can be delivered to all five London airports, hotels, Airbnbs and short-let properties, and same-day delivery is available across London. If you’re weighing up a purchase, a few weeks of hire tells you more than any brochure.

Paying For It

Two things reduce the cost with any mobility equipment supplier in the UK.

VAT Relief

Mobility equipment is VAT-free for people with a qualifying disability or chronic illness. You declare eligibility at the point of purchase, and no doctor’s letter is needed. GOV.UK sets out who counts as disabled for VAT purposes. If you don’t qualify or don’t complete the declaration, VAT is charged at the applicable rate.

Monthly Payments

PayItMonthly spreads the cost over up to 12 monthly installments at 0%, on selected products including stairlifts, electric wheelchairs and powerchairs. You must be 18 or over and a UK resident, and it’s subject to status and affordability checks. Late or missed payments can affect your access to credit later, and PayItMonthly isn’t currently regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Ten Questions Worth Asking Any Mobility Equipment Supplier

  1. Is the home survey free, and is the quote no-obligation?
  2. Are you a BHTA member, and can I verify that in the directory?
  3. Who carries out the installation, your engineers or a subcontractor?
  4. Is installation included in the price?
  5. What does the warranty cover, for how long, and what’s excluded?
  6. What are your service hours for warranty calls?
  7. Does the extended warranty require annual servicing, and what does a service cost?
  8. Do I have a cooling-off period, and does it apply to a made-to-measure item?
  9. Can I hire before I buy?
  10. Will you confirm in writing whether my order qualifies for VAT relief?

A supplier who answers all ten without hesitating is the one to deal with.
