A fully charged mobility scooter battery takes you 15km to 50km (9.3 to 31 miles), depending on the model. The Equinox Travel covers 15km, the Smart 20km, the Nomad 38km and the Grande 50km. You’ll get less than that in real use, and this guide explains why.
Every mobility scooter battery in our mobility scooter range charges from an ordinary plug socket at home. Three of the four have batteries you can lift out and carry indoors, which matters more than people expect when the scooter lives in a shed or a porch.
How Far Does A Mobility Scooter Battery Go on One Charge?
Here’s what that means for each model:
Equinox Travel: A 9 kg Mobility Scooter Battery With Its Own Handle
The Equinox Travel’s battery sits in its own case with a large handle, and it weighs 9kg. It’s one of the five sections the scooter dismantles into, and one of the lighter ones to carry.
You can charge it on the scooter or lift it out and charge it on its own. The charger runs on 100 to 240 volts and puts out 24V at 2 amps, and it charges from any standard UK or European socket. That suits the trips this model is built for: cruises, ferries and motorhome journeys across Europe.
A full charge covers 15km (9.3 miles), which Adapt A Home describes as a day of moderate travel use, such as sightseeing in a town or getting around a cruise port.
Equinox Smart: Two Batteries Instead of One
The Equinox Smart runs on two 6Ah lithium battery packs at 24V, and both lift out. Together they give 20km (12.4 miles) on a full charge.
Because they come out separately, you can carry them in one at a time and charge them indoors while the folded scooter stays in the hall or the car. The charger is a portable unit that runs on 100 to 240 volts and puts out 24V at 2 amps.
The scooter also has a USB socket for charging your phone, and a power-saving mode that shuts it off when it’s been left idle. The display shows the battery level, speed, lights and any error warnings.
Equinox Nomad: A Choice of Mobility Scooter Battery Size
The Equinox Nomad comes with a 24V 38Ah battery as standard, which covers 38km (24 miles). There’s a larger battery option that takes it to around 50km (31 miles).
The batteries come out so you can charge them indoors, which is the sensible route if the scooter lives in a garage or a shed. The charger supplied is either 24V 4A or 24V 6A, depending on which battery you choose, so keep the one that came with the scooter and don’t swap it for a spare from another machine.
If you’re choosing between the two battery sizes, work out your longest regular round trip first, then call us on 020 8191 3247. The bigger battery is only worth paying for if you’ll actually use the distance.
Equinox Grande: the Long-Range Option
The Equinox Grande carries a 24V 75Ah mobility scooter battery, the largest in the range, and covers up to 50km (31 miles). Most owners charge it overnight from a standard UK socket and start the day full.
It’s the heaviest-duty machine in the range, with a 750W motor and a build aimed at grass, gravel and slopes. It also runs a large LCD display, full LED lights, a Bluetooth speaker and a USB charging port.
At 135kg the scooter isn’t going indoors, so think about where it will be parked and how the cable will reach.
Here’s the mobility scooter battery in each model, and how you charge it.

Why Your Mobility Scooter Battery Won’t Hit the Full Range
The distance on the specific sheet comes from ideal conditions. Your actual range depends on your weight, the condition of the battery, how you’ve been charging it, the terrain, the weather, your speed setting and your driving style.
In practice, that means a flat, smooth pavement at a steady pace gives you the best result. Hills, rough ground, cold days and long stretches at top speed all pull it down.
So don’t plan your day around the headline number. Work out the round trip you actually make, then pick a scooter with room to spare. Call us on 020 8191 3247 for an honest estimate based on where you’ll be using it.
How to Charge a Mobility Scooter Battery Safely
Charging is when most battery fires happen. The London Fire Brigade points out that charging puts stress on a battery, and a damaged battery or the wrong charger can overheat.
Your mobility scooter battery charger is the part most of this advice is about. The Brigade’s guidance is straightforward:
- Use the charger that came with the battery, or one the manufacturer recommends. The wrong charger can overload the battery.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Unplug the charger once charging has finished.
- Charge on a hard, flat surface where the heat can escape.
- Charge away from your main route through the house, and never where it would block your way out.
- Fit a smoke alarm in the room where you charge.
- Let the battery cool down after use before you plug it in.
- Never leave a battery charging overnight while you’re asleep, or when you’re out.
- Don’t charge a battery that’s been dropped or damaged.
- Protect batteries from extreme heat and cold.
The point about not charging while you sleep catches people out, because plugging in at bedtime feels like the natural routine. Charge in the evening instead, then unplug before bed.
If you live in a block of flats, check the rules first. Camden Council, for example, does not allow mobility scooters to be stored in communal areas of council-owned buildings, because they can block escape routes.
What If the Scooter Can’t Come Indoors?
This is where removable batteries earn their keep. On the Travel, the Smart and the Nomad, you can lift the battery out and charge it inside while the scooter stays in a porch, a garage or an outbuilding. You get a warm, dry charge in a room you can keep an eye on, without wheeling a scooter through the hallway.
If you’re buying a flat with no lift, or a house with a step at the front door, tell us at the demo. It changes which model makes sense.
Warning Signs Your Mobility Scooter Battery is Failing
The London Fire Brigade says a failing lithium battery usually gives you warning signs before anything goes wrong. Stop using it straight away if you notice:
- Heat. Some warmth during charging and use is normal. Extremely hot to the touch is not.
- Bulging. A battery swelling out of shape, or any lump or leak, is a common sign of failure.
- Noise. Hissing or cracking sounds have been reported from failing batteries.
- Smell. A strong or unusual smell coming from the battery.
Don’t wait to see if it settles down. Stop using it and call us on 020 8191 3247.
Buying Replacement Batteries for Mobility Scooters
Replacement batteries for mobility scooters are sold by voltage and capacity, so the safe route is one made for your exact model.
Check these before you order anything:
- The model, voltage and capacity. A Nomad takes a 24V battery; the Grande’s is 24V 75Ah. Guessing is how people end up with something that doesn’t fit or doesn’t perform.
- Who you’re buying from. The London Fire Brigade advises buying a replacement mobility scooter battery charger only from reputable sellers, and making sure both the battery and the charger meet UK safety standards. It also warns that batteries bought online may not meet UK safety rules.
- Whether it’s under warranty. Every Equinox scooter comes with a 12-month warranty, and you can extend it.
- VAT. If you qualify for VAT relief, GOV.UK confirms you don’t pay VAT on repairs, maintenance, spare parts or accessories for qualifying equipment either. That applies to a replacement battery, not just the scooter.
If you’re not sure which battery your scooter takes, call us with the model name and we’ll tell you. It takes a minute and it’s cheaper than ordering the wrong one.
How to Dispose of Old Batteries for Mobility Scooters
Don’t put it in your household rubbish or your recycling bin. The London Fire Brigade warns that lithium batteries in normal bins can be damaged or overheat and start a fire.
Check your council’s website for battery recycling points, or use the Recycle Your Electricals service to find one near you. If we’re fitting a replacement, ask us to take the old one away.
Flying with a Scooter Battery
The Equinox Smart comes with flight-safe batteries, but don’t book on that alone. Airlines set their own rules based on the watt-hour rating of the battery.
Call us on 020 8191 3247 and we’ll confirm the exact rating for your model, then tell your airline at least 48 hours before you fly. Requirements vary between carriers, so the airline’s own policy is the one that counts.
Try One Before You Commit
Mobility scooter battery range is hard to judge from a page. It helps to sit on the scooter and talk it through with someone who can tell you whether it’ll cover your usual trip to the shops and back.
We offer a free, no-obligation home demo on every model in our range. Book it on the mobility scooters page, or call 020 8191 3247.
