Do I need a licence to use a mobility scooter in the UK?

No licence is required to drive a mobility scooter in the UK. They are classed as mobility aids rather than motor vehicles, so anyone who meets the age requirement can use one.

There are two main classes:

  • Class 2 – Designed for pavements and footpaths, with a top speed of 4 mph.
  • Class 3 – Larger scooters that can travel up to 8 mph on the road, but must be limited to 4 mph when on pavements. These scooters must also be registered with the DVLA.
Only Class 3 scooters need to be registered with the DVLA, as they are allowed on the road. Class 2 scooters do not need registration.

To drive a Class 3 scooter on the road, you must be at least 14 years old. There is no minimum age for using a Class 2 scooter on pavements.

There is no official test or licence required. However, many organisations and charities offer training sessions to help new users learn safe driving and handling skills, which can be very useful.

Yes, Class 3 scooters must be fitted with a horn, lights, indicators, and reflectors so they can be used safely on the road. Class 2 scooters do not need these features.
