About mobile or portable hoists
Also known as portable hoists or patient lifters. These small, mobile devices can lift someone from a chair to a bed, from a bed to a commode. All mobile-assisted transfer devices for disabled people have been developed, especially for the domestic care environment and the patient in mind. However, they can be an issue for carers and loved ones as they require the operator’s ability to push and manoeuvre. They have the following advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
Portable and typically folds down to take up less space when not used. It can be folded and placed into the boot of a car. Or even put away in a cupboard when not needed.
Disadvantages
Requires flat, level floors. They can be difficult to manoeuvre on carpets and requires effort to move and position correctly. It is difficult to lift from regular domestic beds and seating without enough gap to allow the legs of the hoist to pass underneath the bed or chair. Requires charging/plugging in and some mobile hoists have a limited lift height capacity. The wheels need to be locked and unlocked during the transfer process.
A fitted ceiling track hoist or a gantry hoist should be used if your property has uneven floors, thick carpet, limited space under the chair or bed or if you require a high lifting range.
